Frequently asked questions

How do you verify a handyman's license?

For every paid tenant in a state that requires a license for the work they perform (typically electrical and plumbing), we check the license number against the state's contractor licensing board API. The result is recorded with the verification date, and the "Verified Pro" badge is granted only when the license is current and in good standing.

How do you verify insurance?

Pros upload a current Certificate of Insurance (COI) to their dashboard. The COI must name the carrier, policy number, expiration date, and coverage limits. We re-prompt for a fresh COI 14 days before expiration, and we automatically remove the trust badge if a renewal isn't received.

Are reviews on LocalHandyman.work real?

Every review is tied to a real Appointment record in our system. We rate-limit per phone number, scan for duplicate text, and remove any review that can't be linked to a real completed job. We never delete reviews to favor a pro — only fraudulent ones.

What is a background check on Pro+ tier?

Tenants on the Pro and Elite plans can opt into a Checkr-powered background check. When passed, the "Background Checked" badge appears on their public profile, with the check date.

What happens if a customer has a complaint?

You can dispute any job through the platform. Our support team reviews the case, mediates if both sides are willing, and — if the pro is at fault — issues a refund from our 30-day guarantee fund. Repeat complaints lead to platform removal.

How is "Veteran Owned" verified?

Tenants claiming the Veteran Owned badge upload a redacted DD-214 (or equivalent verifying document). Our team verifies and grants the badge.

What does the "Top Rated" badge mean?

The pro has a 4.8+ average rating across at least 25 verified reviews from real, completed jobs.

How do you protect my personal information?

Your contact information is shared only with the pro you actually book. We never sell, auction, or distribute your contact info to multiple pros. Our database is tenant-isolated and encrypted at rest.
